When you need to choose the width of a side-menu or the height of a top-menu, instead of just picking a random size, you might benefit from adopting more or less well-established standard-sizes.
There aren't many well-established standards - but the tendency is beginning to show. People creating java applets, news tickers, visit counters, web polls etc. etc. have started to adopt the standards set by the leading ad-banner-institutions.
This is as a result of the fact, that the only common thing webmasters consider when they layout their pages, is the size of banners.
By adopting these standards people creating other additions to webpages (webpolls etc.) minimizes the risk that people will not use their products because they don't fit into the layout.
There still aren't a wide range of well-established banner-sizes, but the tendency over the past years has shown a clear movement towards certain proportions.
