Search Engine Tips :
Good Tricks

This page lists some of the good tricks that can be incorporated and actually works to give you a better listing with robot search engines.

As you read through the text it should become obvious that good search engine listings is a matter of design - it's incorporated on your pages in the middle of the content and throughout the entire navigation structure. To put it short: Good search engine indexing starts when you start developing the site!

GOOD TRICK 1 : KEYWORDS IN URL

Robot says: If a site has a keyword in its URL it must be devoted to the topic.

Therefore: One of the best ways to get a good listing on the keyword "Elvis" is to actually have "elvis" in the url of the pages. Best of all is to own the domain name "www.elvis.com" - Second best is to own a related name such as "www.elvis.net" or "www.elvis-alive.com" - Third best is to own a sub domain such as "www.elvis.echoecho.com", fourth best is to have a sub-folder, such as : www.echoecho.com/elvis/alive.html Finally the page itself could be elvis.html.

GOOD TRICK 2 : KEYWORDS IN TITLES

Robot says: If a page has a keyword in its title it must be devoted to the topic.

Therefore: Make sure the "gold words" appear in the title of your pages - you may have titles such as "Graceland", "Hawaii era" and "Las Vegas era". Although these titles may be precise for the content on your pages - if you added a little to them you could yell out to the robots that your site is about Elvis, for example: "Hawaii era - Life of Elvis Chapter 2"

GOOD TRICK 3 : KEYWORDS IN HEADERS

Robot says: "If a header has a keyword, anything that follows must be on that topic".

Therefore: Make sure to include the "gold words" wherever possible in headers. Instead of just writing "Hawaii era" on top of your page, arrange for things so you get the "Life of Elvis" part written as a sub-header. Most robots will identify huge text as headers. But some also categorize single lines written in front of tables as headers.

GOOD TRICK 4 : KEYWORDS IN LINKS

Robot says: If a link has a keyword as linkable text, then the linked page is about the topic.

Therefore: If you want to get on top of the keyword "Elvis" make sure that the link doesn't say "Hawaii Era" but rather: "Elvis : The Hawaii Era".

GOOD TRICK 5 : KEYWORDS AT TOP OF PAGES

Robot says: Words that appear at the top of the page describe the content of the page.

Therefore: As mentioned earlier in this article, most robots will not give priority to words that appear at the bottom of the page. But furthermore: the closer to the top the more priority is given to the words.

GOOD TRICK 6 : PERFECT SYNTAX

Robot says: If the HTML code of a site is filled with errors the same probably goes for the content.

Therefore: Make sure that your HTML is actually error free, not only so it looks okay (browsers can often show things correct even if there are minor errors in the HTML), but also so it validates to perfection in an HTML validator.

GOOD TRICK 7 : PERFECT SPELLING

Robot says: If the spelling is filled with errors it's probably bad content.

Therefore: Make sure to spellcheck your entire site. Most robots will initially try find out if the page is written in a language that it can do a spellcheck on (if 99% of the words are unknown it's probably in a different language). If the site is in a known language a spellcheck will be completed and used as a basis for the indexing along with the methods mentioned above.
