BANNER AD LINKS

Burst
A service provided by Burstmedia.

They offer as part of the concept, CPM ads (Cost Per Mille (Mille=1000) which is the same as Pay Per View).

My Experience:

I ran a campaign at Burst in early 1999. I was attracted by the CPM opportunity.

After signing up, I realized that about 30 different companies were advertising through Burst. About half of their advertisers offered CPM ads, at prices from $2.50 to $5.00 per 1000 exposures.

At that time I had about 6,000 pageviews a day, so I quickly calculated that it would generate 6*$3 = $18 a day.

Since I had only signed up for a month to month agreement, Burst would charge half of this. (If you sign a contract stating you will use ONLY Burst for 3 years you can get 80% of gross earnings from your ads.)

Okay, so I was down at $9 per day which was still something.

I signed up with all their ads and started advertising.

It seems, at the time, they had about 10 times as many pages offering to show ads, as they had advertisers buying ad space.

This means that only 1/10th of my pages actually was lucky enough to carry an ad.

The $9 was now reduced to $0.90 a day.
90 cents for 6.000 pageviews!

All in all... Burst would pay approximately 15 cents per 1000 hits on my site.

After running campaigns with Burst for a month or so, some of Burst's clients wanted to run campaigns exclusively on my site. The difference between this and the campaigns mentioned above is that the exclusive campaigns only run on sites that are handpicked by the advertiser.
These campaigns paid a much higher CPM than the campaigns available to all sites. Typically between $10 and $15 per thousand impressions.

I don't know if my site was offered more exclusive campaigns than the average - but it is obvious that the more your sites relevance is to certain campaigns - the more likely it is that you get to run exclusive campaigns.

If, for example, you have a site dealing with non-materialistic buddhist life in Tibet, you probably won't get many exclusive campaigns.

If - on the contrary, you run a site that deals with computer hardware (ex: a site that compares different products) - and if it is a unique and popular site, you'd most likely get many exclusive campaigns.

ClickTrade

ClickTrade is a service provided by LinkExchange.

You can surf through hundreds of advertisers and pick the ones you want to have on your page.

Before getting paid, the advertiser needs to accept you. This means when you find an ad you'd like on your page, you simply click a button and the advertiser gets notified about your request.
A couple of days later you will receive an acceptance or a decline.

When you have earned $25 you can request that a check be sent to you.

The advertisers will pay you either per click or per buy.

My Experience:
I signed up with this service during last quarter of 1998.

After spending hours surfing through the many advertisers I finally had made about 30 different requests for carrying ads.

Of these 30, there were:
  • 5 that accepted to pay me 3-5 cents per click.

  • 20 that offered to pay me NOTHING per click.]

  • 5 that never responded.]

I signed up with the 5 that offered to pay money, and placed approximately 10 ads on my site. My earnings were about $0.25 a day on average.

The 10 ads were exposed 250 times a day, which gives a resulting pay per thousand exposures of $1.

I also tried placing the banners all over my site. This resulted in one click per 200 exposures.
At an average rate of 5 cents per click this summarize to 25 cents per 1000 exposures.

OBS:
Expect less than $1 per 1000 hits for banners placed on high relevance pages!
Expect 25 cents per 1000 hits for banners placed on low relevance pages!

LinkExchange

LinkExchange is by far the best known banner exchange network.

Unlike Burst and ClickTrade this is not a matter of hosting banners for others in return for money.

With LinkExchange you host banners and get your own banner hosted in return. However it is not a 1-1 rate.

The entire service is free for you, but LinkExchange finances it by adding their own banners in between.

This means that each time you host two banners your own banner gets hosted once. This way LinkExchange itself gets half of the banner advertising related to the service.

Judge for yourself if you find this procedure fair!

SmartClicks

This is a service similar to LinkExchange that will allow you to advertise your page for a selected audience.

Four Corners Effective Banners

This service offers tips and ideas on how to improve your banners. After all - signing up with a banner exchange service is worthless if your banner does not attract visitors.

The site also runs a gallery of some of the most successful banners on the internet. The gallery should give you a good idea of what works and what doesn't.
